The use case

Shay and I met under professional circumstances and connected. He was already a well-established IT executive, but he wanted some guidance, a brainstorming partner, and some management and team-building coaching.

"And it was a lifesaver — I avoided a big embarrassment in the executive room!"

A few details on working with Joe

I was working with Joe a few years back when I was leading the Digital Tech team at Teva.

We worked together for almost 5 years, and his main role was executive consultant to me in the day-to-day strategic work — supporting me in evaluating new digital platforms, handling and mitigating relevant security issues, helping me build and re-sharpen my department strategy, and more. His knowledge was deep, and his view on things was strategic.

I didn’t need just another one who knows how to implement stuff — I was looking for someone who could bring me a 360-degree view, who had tons of experience, and could provide me with the information I needed (and didn’t know I needed), not just the information I wanted. That was the key to his success working with me.

Prior to my move from Teva to Novartis, I used Joe's help to coach me and prepare me for the move, and later, to settle into the role.

Although they are both pharmaceutical companies, there are huge differences in culture and ways of working — one is an Israeli company, the other Swiss-based. Also, the scale: while Teva had 40k employees, Novartis had 200k at the time — so everything was bigger.

Joe helped me in lots of different stages. He helped me set the scene and build my relevant preferences to align with Novartis. He continued helping me understand what the company was looking for, where I was a good fit and where I wasn’t, and helped me prepare for the different interviews (and there were 7 of them). We also reflected on the interviews and worked on how to position myself in the best way.

After successfully getting the role I wanted, Joe continued to work with me — supporting me with setting and laying the strategy, putting things in place, navigating cultural differences, and setting myself up for success. As proof — I was promoted after only one year!

Best money ever spent!

What’s one moment or conversation with Joe that really stuck with you?

I remember after one of the meetings I had, when talking with Joe, I told him that the CIO said 1,2,3 and asked for 1,2,3, and I planned my next steps accordingly. Joe’s response was: “That’s not what he asked you — that’s your interpretation of it. What he said was 1,2,3, but based on his culture and the company culture, what he really meant was something else — and what you are planning to do is not aligned.”

And it was a lifesaver — I avoided a big embarrassment in the executive room!

If you had to sum up Joe’s “superpower” in one line, what would it be?

Smart like hell, has a 360° view and strategic vision, knows how to quickly get to the core of things and understand what’s important and what’s just noise, has very in-depth technology knowledge that’s broad across all domains, and is someone I know I can always rely on.
